Mrs. Hale is a farmer's wife and is described as a "large" and "comfortable-looking" woman (Glaspell 519). She sympathizes with Minnie, and believes that her husband was the reason she lived such a sad and lonely life. Hale knew Minnie in her youth, when she was Minnie Foster, and laments Minnie's transformation from a popular, joyful girl to an isolated woman (see quote below). She wishes she had visited Minnie more over the years and blames herself a litle bit for Minnie's downfall. As for the men, Mrs. Hale never fully approves of their behavior and is confident in her own judgments to the end.
